Early Reading

What is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds SSP is a government accredited Phonics Programme that the school uses to teach the skills of Early Reading.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. Based on the original Letters and Sounds, but extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme meeting all the expectations of the National Curriculum, and to prepare our children to go beyond the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check.

What does that mean for your child?

At St. Mary's we teach children daily Phonics lessons in Reception Class and Class 1 (Year1).  During these sessions they have the chance to revise, learn, practise and apply sounds to help them read.
Three times a week they will take part in group reading sessions where they will learn to read with fluency and expression using books closely matched to sounds that they have learned.
Children will take these books home, along with a book from the library to share with their parents.

What if your child is finding learning to read difficult?

Regular assessments help teachers to plan small group or individual catch-up sessions that will enable your child to make accelerated progress. They will do this in addition to their daily phonics lessons with the rest of the class.

What if I am unsure about Phonics and how to make the sounds correctly?

Always contact your class teacher with any concerns you may have.  There is also a useful website below that shows you how to clearly and accurately make the sounds that are being taught.
